Nice Weekend

Grilling If you take five days in the Pacific Northwest, and two of those days are weekend days, the chances are pretty good that the weekend days will be cloudy and/or rainy. Not this weekend, though. Wednesday through Friday were cloudy, but Saturday and Sunday were bright and sunny, and not too warm. Simply perfect! I managed to barbecue twice — hamburgers and hot dogs on Saturday, and chicken, kielbasa, and garlic potatoes on Sunday. The picture here shows the chicken and gigantic Ron Jeremy kielbasa on the grill Sunday evening. Mmmmm, barbecue.

The nice weather let me do some work on my truck’s stereo. I pulled the new subwoofer out and caulked the corners inside. The enclosure is actually a cheap do-it-yourself box with a some adhesive strips on the joints meant to seal the box. I had little faith in sealing capabilities of these adhesive strips, so I removed the speaker and caulked all the joints. This picture shows the caulk in the box. I then stapled some sound baffle to the inside of the box, and put the speaker back on. I also installed a 1 farad stiffening capacitor to the stereo’s wiring. While is wasn’t drastic, I could see the dome light dimming when the headlights were on and the system hit a deep bass note… and I can’t have that. So $130 and more goddamned crimping remedies the situation. And you know, all my hard work paid off. The sub sounds better! If you want to see a picture of the enclosure, subwoofer, amplifier , and stiffening capacitor, just click here.

I did other work on the truck, too. I finally got the new locking t-handles for the canopy. With Tina’s help, I removed the old latches (with were attached with rivets), and installed the new handles. Now I can lock the back of the truck to keep out the curious. I also put new chrome license plate frames on the truck. I took off the dealer frames, because advertising should cost money. Every car dealer in the world seems to think the front and back of our cars are their personal billboards. Fuck them! That’s spam in my Internet-based world.

Lastly, what the fuck is the deal with the iPod culture? I was in Wal-Mart for drill bits, contact cement, and other odds and ends (including shit-wipe, if you must know) and ran across this pathetic display of hand-held fans. It’s the “iFan.” I’ll say that again. It’s the iFan! Goddamnit, that’s fucking stupid. Everybody and their dead grandparents seem to believe that slapping an lower-case “i” in front of a word makes it cool. iAm iFucking iTired of iPod iCulture. You would think these little miracles of MP3-playing electronic goodness were the greatest thing since pre-marital sex. They’re definately more popular that pre-marital sex! Fuck, people, it’s an MP3 player. And just because there’s an lower-case vowel in front of the name doesn’t make the product any better.

Boom!

pioneer_tsw301r.jpg This past Independence Day weekend was all about the boom! I took a personal day on Monday so I could enjoy a long, four-day weekend. It was a nice weekend, too.

On Sunday, with Tina’s help, I added a 12″ subwoofer and 200 watt (RMS) amplifier to the truck’s new stereo. I drilled my first hole in the truck, too, a 7/16-inch hole in the firewall for an 8-gauge power cable from the battery. I put a nice plastic grommet in the hole and fed the cable through it. Before I put the carpet back and re-attached the kick panel, I smeared a bunch of silicone sealant around the hole to keep out any moisture or insects. Then it was simply a matter of running the cable under the door sill to the back of the truck. I also ran the signal cables and remote wire to the back of the truck, being careful to keep the signal cables from the power and remote wires. It was getting too dark to see, so I gave up for the day. But Monday morning I was back at it. A few crimps here, a few more crimps there… here a crimp, there a crimp, everywhere a crimp crimp. I made a ground to the chassis thanks to a seat bolt, and when I turned the ignition key to ACC, the amp fired up. That 12″ Pioneer subwoofer started booming to The Crystal Method‘s Vegas. Sweet!

I made a trip into town to fill the propane tank for a little Independence Day grilling on the patio. Since I was in town, I stopped by work and picked up the CHMSL (third brake light) I ordered to replace the broken one in the truck’s canopy. I also stopped at Albertsons for some grilling food; a couple of thick sirloin steaks, hamburger, corn on the cob, buns, chips, Pepsi, and some Snapple. When I got home, I decided to install the new CHMSL, again with Tina’s help. It was surprisingly easy, but it’s still a little unnerving to see the tail lights removed from the truck. When I was done, though, both corner brake lights worked, and the third brake light on the canopy also worked.

Tuesday brought more boom! Mother Earth and Mother Nature refused to be outdone by our Nation's birthday celebration. There was a 3.6 magnitude earthquake that boomed just off the tip of Vancouver Island, Canada, which Whidbey Islanders felt. Later in the evening, there was brief rain shower that brought some distant thunder booms.

Of course, once it was dark outside, the fireworks started booming in the night sky. Surprisingly, the fireworks didn’t last much past 11:30pm. Normally, we hear fireworks well past midnight, but not this year. I guess it was a little too cold outside.

In all, it was a very nice weekend. I’m looking forward to early Semptember when I’ll try to weasel another personal day to turn Labor Day into a 96-hour “goodbye to Summer” weekend.
