Missing /dev/null

Sometimes I run across some tech tidbit that I want to save, and have no place to save it. Tonight was one such time. I was working on this godamned ticket system on my VPS account, and a friend jabbered me trivia question about creating /dev/null if it’s accidentally deleted.

[06:53:44 PM] <vmann> Sheesh, now I remember why I like this work... did you know sshd will not start properly without a valid /dev/null file? Remember how to make one after some bonehead tried to delete a file by typing 'mv somefile /dev/null' as root?
[06:55:00 PM] <wafwot> Ummm... No... mknod something?
[06:55:33 PM] <vmann> hehe, yep! rm /dev/null; mknod -m 666 /dev/null c 1 3 to be exact
[06:57:38 PM] <wafwot> Wow... I'd have to look that up...
[06:57:39 PM] <vmann> Time to go play with kittens. Now that that crap is off my mind. Can't wait to be off duty on Tuesday
[06:57:45 PM] <vmann> Yeah, I did too
[06:58:02 PM] <vmann> But I knew -rw-rw-rw wasn't the right mode for /dev/null

I really should look into some kind of software package where I can store these little gems as I come across them. I’m getting too old to remember new shit.

Thanksgiving

Tina and I had a nice Thanksgiving. We cooked an 11.6 pound turkey, and had all the fixings; cranberry sauce, potatos, stuffing, corn, rolls, gravy, ad nauseam. Since it was a smaller-than-usual bird, it dinner was finished around 4:00pm.

I watched the football games on television (both Detroit and Dallas lost, damnit), which got me to thinking of my Dad who died this past March.

Growing up, my family alway spent Thanksgiving at my paternal grandparents’ house. Every year we’d get dressed up and make the hour-long drive over the river and through the woods to Grandma’s house. It was a day of family and football. My two brothers and I would watch the games with my Dad and Grandfather, while my Mom and Grandmother would be in the kitchen. It was a typical Thanksgiving tradition.

Both of my parents attended Roxborough High School, we always got a phone call from a schooltime friend of my parents’ about the Roxborough-Roman Catholic football game played on Thanksgiving. I decided I’d try to find the score online. Poor Roxborough lost to Roman Catholic High School 33 to 6. This got me to looking for the traditional Thanksgiving game between my alma mater, East High School, and their rival Henderson High School. Henderson beat East, 32 to 7.

With the exception of the four football games, it was a nice day. I like a quiet Thanksgiving with just the two of us… and a bunch of cannibalistic parrots. They like turkey leftover like everyone else does.

Holy shit. It’s November already, and it’s cold outside. A little more than three weeks ’til Thanksgiving Day, less than 2 months to Kissmyass day, and exactly 2 months ’til 2006. What the fuck happened to 2005?

Now that autumn is here, I’m back to suffering with my respitory problems. Every year since 2002, when it gets cold outside, I start having difficulty breathing, and develop a nagging cough. No one seems to know what to about it. Antibiotics and inhalers haven’t cured me. Seems to only treat the symptoms. Bastard doctors.

Found out yesterday that a good friend’s father is in the hospital’s ICU, and he’s not doing well. My friend flew to Michigan yesterday on a red eye flight. I was happy to hear that he flew home, and I sure do hope his father gets well soon. I can’t help but think of my father who passed away this past March. I miss him a great deal.

Anyway, I’ll be making some server changes in the coming days as I move things from one hosting company to another. I just opened a new virtual private server account at Spry. Having full control of everything will be much easier than having to wait for the hosting company to open and resolve a ticket. Not that I need much help. I think I’ve opened three tickets at this hosting company Fuitadnet… and those were because of something that was broke that I couldn’t fix on my own.

This will be the last post to my blog until the site is moved. Shouldn’t take too long. Not like you care. No one reads this damned thing. My life is too boring to have a "following."
