KDE and Komposé

kompose screenshot I got tired of Kubuntu on my laptop, and decided to go back to using Debian. While Kubuntu is based on Debian, it’s still not the true Debian I know and love. And, just like usual, I decided to run unstable (etch), eventhough Sarge was finally released.

This screen shot is of Komposé, a KDE knockoff of Apple’s Exposé. It’s pretty cool. I just move the mouse to the upper right-hand corner of the screen (yes, it configurable for any corner), and I’m presented with a full-screen task manager with thumbnails of all windows. Click on that thumbnail, and the program is brough to the foreground. But with all it’s 1337ness, it’s a drain on the CPU. Komposé has support for the Composite and Damage extensions of XOrg, but I don’t have XOrg installed (yet), and Komposé is a bit “crashy” with those extensions. So, Komposé doesn’t run all the time… but it’s a cool little app that is fun to play with.

Dead Battery

Dead Battery Charging It was dark, cool, raining, and breezy on the way home Firday, which is typical Pacific Northwest weather for July oddly enough. Because of the dreary weather, I had the parking lights on while driving home. I stopped at the grocery store before heading home so I didn’t have to drive this weekend. My plan worked out well. Maybe too well. I left the parking lights on by mistake when I got home (c’mon, it’s a 1968 Mustang… there are no idiot buzzers). By not going anywhere all weekend, the battery was good and dead come this morning. I needed to get a ride into work… so I called Leigh. He starts his day at 9am and was able to give me a lift into work.

Of course, today has to be one of the busiest Mondays in a long time. An upgrade Sunday in a large neighborhood network we control didn’t go very well, and many customers were still without their fiber-based Internet this morning. On top of that, one of the support techs that would normally be answering the phone was “transferred to” (read: “stolen by”) the Redmond office. We seem to be hemmorhaging techs at work. Every few weeks we’re training another one…

Since I was an hour late thanks to my stupidity, I stayed an extra hour, leaving at 6pm. Rick gave me a lift back home. For some reason, the day just seemed to drag along. I guess it’s because I started at 9, had lunch at noon, then stayed until 6. I’m used to 4 hours before lunch and 4 hours after. Today was 3 hours before lunch, and 5 hours after.

Steve’s Crash

07-07-05_1656.jpg Today (technically yesterday) at work, Steve maganged to break one of the plastic legs of the chair he was sitting in and fell flat on his ass. It made a hell of a noise; even people downstairs were wondering what happened. We were all laughing hysterically with Steve. Yeah… with him.

Bob quickly ended his land-line call, grabbed his camera phone, and snapped this picture. Bob and I joked that it would make a nice entry in my blog, to which Steve came into my office and asked me not post this picture. He even asked nicely. I don’t remember if I told him I would or wouldn’t…

Well, not only did I post the picture here, I also posted it to the staff page on the company intranet so everyone company-wide can see it. I’m such a prick. I’ll bet Steve can’t wait to transfer to Redmond.
