Okay, I know I’ve taken a few pictures of these kittens at the back door, but I couldn’t resist this one. I just got back from the grocery store, and these three fuzzballs were waiting for some of that expensive-ass milk. We actually thin it down with some warm water so it doesn’t bother the kittens too much. Contrary to the title of this post, we have not named these guys or their mother. It’s getting close to having to find a home for them, though…

Jesus! A gallon of milk costs $4.69?! What the fuck is going on with milk prices? Yeah yeah, the government sets the milk prices. They also set the minimum federal wage at $5.15. So, I guess the government feels it’s okay to charge someone nearly an hour’s work for a gallon of milk. I pitty the poor bastards at minimum wage. I wonder how many will end up with osteoporosis…

Milk price and gas prices are through the roof! There seems to be a direct correlation between the price for a gallon of gas and a gallon of milk. Well, maybe not, but goddamn, when it costs me $7 to go to the store for a gallon of milk, it pisses me off. I fully expect to Ma and Pa Dairyfarmer in the next Dairy Association commercial I see, wearing Arab garb (turban and all), carrying an AK-47 assault rifle (which we all know is the modern-day scimitar).

It really boils down to economics. There’s a shortage of (four-legged) cows in this country for two reasons; the ban on importing mad-cow diseased heifers from Canada, and dairy farmers selling their herds (quitting the business) to cattle ranchers. It’s more lucrative to turn the cow into steak and hamburger than it is to milk the cow for milk and cheese. Add the high cost of alfalfa to feed the herds, the high price of gas to transport the milk, and limited supply for higher demand. It all leads to almost $5 for a gallon of milk. Of course, the farmers that are still producing dairy products love these high prices. More money for less work. Bastards! Of course, they only get about a third of the price we pay. Don’t spend that $1.56 all in one place, you fuckers!

I really don’t care how much the farmer gets. I don’t care if feed and fuel prices are too high. If oil workers can drill into the earth, and put a black sludge into a tanker ship, float it across an entire fucking ocean, refine it down to a clear-yet-volitile fuel, transport it to the Texaco station and allow me to pump it into my car for only $2.30 a gallon… then I think dairy farmers can buy alfalfa (and hormones, c’mon, you know they do), feed and milk their cows, homogenize and bottle the milk, and transport it to Albertsons for about the same price. I’m tellin’ ya, dairy farmers and oil men are price fixing.
