The connector of the AC adapter for my laptop finally broke. It’s been intermittent for weeks now, but as long as the battery was in the computer, I didn’t have any trouble fucking with the cord enough to “re-engage” the electricity.
Well, since the price for a new power adapter at eBay ranges from $40 to $65 (shipping included), and online retailers start at $55, I thought I’d put my rusty soldering skills to work. I went to Radio Shack for a new coaxial power plug to replace the broken one. They didn’t have a plug that matched, so I jury-rigged the broken plug.
The picture here shows the connections I made (covered in shrink tubing). Another layer of shrink tubing to add more strength, a quick check for shorts with the multimeter, and I was ready to plug it in. I tested the voltage with the multimeter before I plugged it into the laptop. Needless to say, it worked. I’m typing this blog entry as the battery is charging. My maternal grandfather would be proud.
